John and I met at a Civil Air Patrol encampment in Devil's Lake, ND when we were 16 and 15 respectively. We began exchanging e-mails (in the age before Facebook) and our friendship continued when my family moved across the country to Virginia the next year. We graduated from high school and I went off to college to become a doctor and John joined the Air Force. We kept in touch through many deployments, bases, undergrad, graduate school and medical school. John has always been the friend I called when I had a moral dilemma or just needed encouragement. When my life fell apart in my third year of medical school, I decided to visit John where he was stationed in Alaska to get away from it all for a while. Within a few weeks of being in Alaska I was surprised to learn that I had fallen in love with the Last Frontier and my long-time best friend! Fortunately for me, John felt the same way! We became a couple as easily as breathing and began to plan our life together. Now, I can't imagine my life without John as not only my friend, but also my partner!
